Red-hot Karichu into last eight in Thika

  • Karichu, who is currently leading in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series, beat his club-mate and former Strokeplay champion John Kariuki 3-2 in the third round where Paul Muchangi defeated Royal Nairobi’s Dennis Saikwa 2-1.

Limuru Country Club’s John Karichu advanced to the last eight in this year’s Kenya Amateur Match Play golf championship at the par 72 Thika Greens Golf Resort course on Friday.

Karichu, who is currently leading in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series, beat his club-mate and former Strokeplay champion John Kariuki 3-2 in the third round where Paul Muchangi defeated Royal Nairobi’s Dennis Saikwa 2-1.

Other players who sailed through to the quarter-finals set for Saturday morning, include youngster Mutahi Kibugu of Muthaiga - who beat Vet Lab’s Isaac Makonha 1-up while Railway’s Samuel Njoroge won also 1-up against Jay Sandhu of Royal.

Last year’s losing finalist Edwin Mudanyi of Vet Lab got the better of Peter Rimui of Nyeri 3-2 and South Africa-based and current amateur strokeplay champion Daniel Nduva overcame Robinson Owiti of Vet Lab 1-up in another tough match.

Mike Kisia also from Vet Lab beat George Felix of Vet Lab 1-up while Isiah Otuke edged out John Lejirmah of Golf Park 4-3 to complete the Vet Lab dominance.

Meanwhile, after two successful events at Ruiru and Limuru Country clubs, the hunt for slots in the 2018 KCB Karen Masters Pro-Am shift to Eldoret Golf Club in the North Rift where at least six players will qualify to play in the Pro-Am event, a curtain riser to the Sunshine Tour sanctioned KCB Karen Masters set for July 19 at Karen Country Club.

This weekend’s event has attracted 95 players who will be led by club chairman and one of the leading golfers in the region Andrew Chelogoi. Others vying for the slots will be club captain Jack Tuwei, immediate past captain Moses Tanui and Kamau Watunu among others.

Back in Nairobi, over 100 lady golfers will be at Vet Lab Sports Club for the popular Kabete Ladies Invitation where Lady captain Rachel Ndei has invited among others, Kenya Ladies Golf Union chairman Lucy Muhinga, and a number of leading golfers such as Golf Park’s Sarah Khanyereri, Ashley Awuor and Kiambu’s Wanjiru Karume.

The ladies will be playing in the morning and will be joined by the men in a subsidiary event from noon.
