Karichu takes early lead at Kabete Open

Limuru Country Club’s John Karichu was on Saturday three shots clear from home player Robinson Owiti at the close of round two in this year’s Kabete Open at the par 72 Vet Lab Sports Club course.
The plus one handicap Karichu, who tied for second place in last week’s Uganda Amateur Open, carded level par 72 in the second round of the 54-hole event, for a total of 142 gross.
During the first round Karichu birdied the second, fourth, and fifth and dropped a shot at the 11th for two under par 70. In the afternoon’s second round, Karichu, a former Golfer of The Year champion who appeared to be still enjoying his Uganda Open form, birdied the fourth, 10th, and 16th though dropped shots over the first, 15th and 17th to level the course and take a three shots lead going into Sunday’s final round of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series.
Owiti on the other hand, picked up two bogeys one in the first nine and another at the back nine’s 15th hole, but with birdies over the fourth, 12th and 13th for one under par 71. He had however carded two over par 74 in the morning, to close the day on 145 gross.
The Great Rift Valley Golf Resort’s Simon Njogu, and another Vet Lab player Issac Makokha posted 73 and 76 each to tie for third place.
It was a tough day for some of the leading players such as tournament favourite Edwin Mudanyi, Mike Kisia, and Muthaiga’s Mutahi Kibugu who were down on 154, as Railway’s Samuel Njoroge and George Felix were bunched on 153.This year, the event which also count towards the World Amateur Ranking, attracted a small field of 149 players.
