Kenya ease past Congo, face Rwanda in Region 4 semis

As expected, Kenya eased past Congo in the quarter-finals of the inaugural Africa Region Four Golf Championship at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course on Saturday.

During the morning’s quarter-finals which followed the conclusion of the 36-hole strokeplay qualifying event, Kenya’s top player Daniel Nduva and Edwin Mudanyi beat Congo’s Ruark van Deventer and Victor Yabili 10-8 and in the singles, John Karichu beat Congo’s George Munyao 3-2 but Mutahi Kibugu lost 3-2 to Congo’s Adel Balala.

Munyao and Balala were loaned to the the Democratic Republic of Congo team which arrived for the event with only two players. By the time of going to press, the hosts were battling Rwanda in the semi-finals after the latter's 2-1 victory over Burundi in the quarter-finals.

Rwanda’s Emmanuel Nkurunziza and Celestin Nsanzuwera beat Burundi’s Jean Simbagoye and Shaban Ramzani at the 20th hole in the foursomes while in the singles, Alloys Nsabimana beat Abdul Bizimana 4-2 but Emmanuel Rutayisire went down 1-up to Toyi Saidi.

Tanzania also won 2-1 against Seychelles where Richard Mtweve and George Sembi won 7-6 against Damien Houreau and jemmy Ester and in the singles Victor Joseph of Tanzania won 4-2 against George Andrade but Abbas Adam lost 1-up to Richard Doffay.

In the last game between Uganda and Ethiopia, the Ugandans won both the foursomes and single matches. Adolf Muhumuza and David Kamulindwa won 6-4 against Kaleb Tesfaye and Binyam Syoum. In the singles, Ronald Rugumayo and Joseph Chinyaai won 6-5 against Tolaye Bogaye and Akilu Haile respectively.

Tanzania were drawn against Uganda in the second semi-final. In the other matches to decide on the fifth to eighth positions, DRC were set to meet Burundi while Seychelles were up against Ethiopia.

The third place play-off and he final match will take place on Sunday. A total of eight teams turned up for the event whose 2019 event is likely to take place in Burundi.
