Machakos hosts KPA event

Machakos Golf Club’s par 72 course is where the big action will be this weekend in the local golf scene, as the nine-hole course hosts this year’s first event in the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) golf series.
This annual event in its third year, and the second biggest at Machakos this year, after last month’s “King Of The Course" tournament, has attracted a field of 186 players an entry which is well beyond a nine hole though club captain Paul Musembi Katuku said plans have been made to ensure that the event runs smoothly.
Musembi said at least 74 players mostly club members will be teeing off from as early as 6.32am. This will leave 112 players in the afternoon where with good marshalling, every-one should be able to finish his or her round on time.
As usual, KPA will be using the event to interact with customers and stakeholders from the Machakos County as well as Nairobi County.
Besides the golf event, KPA officials will visit Machakos School for the Physically challenged for a CSR.
Of the 72 guests who were drawn, half of them are from Nyali Golf and Country Club. They will be led by newly elected club chairman John Stokes and deputy Taib Bajaber - who last month hosted the Captain’s Prize.
Also in the list will be be vice-captain Evans Manono, and past chairman Dominic Makau.
Kenya Golf Union (KGU) secretary Ben Omuodo will lead a strong team from Royal Nairobi Golf club while coming from Muthaiga will be immediate former KGU chairman Richard Wanjalla, past Muthaiga chairman Kairu Bachia, club director and KGU executive Philip Ocholla, and ex-captain James Ondigo.
The Royal team will be represented by Maurice Njue, Paul Ichangi, Robert Nyanchoga, Abner Onsomu, Victor Kidiwa, Joseah Kogo, and David Mogere among many others.
Going for the top prize among the local golfers will be David Mwangangi, Dominic Kikuyu, Gilbert Mutulu all of whom will face the club’s elite golfers such as Jackson Nzioki, Tim Ruhiu, and the club’s lowest handicap golfer James Ndunda - who during the lady captain’s prize posted 38 points which was not however good enough to beat Kikuyu and Mwangangi’s 42 points.
The course is currently in good condition and playing long so the club captain is expecting some interesting scores depending how the course is set.
At Ruiru Sports Club, the par 72 course will host the Ruiru Classic. This is an annual event at the club and this year’s edition has attracted a field of 150 who will be battling it out for over a dozen prizes in both the men and ladies category.
