Nyanchama wins Ladies Open invitation crown

Vet Lab Sports Club’s Mercy Nyanchama beat home player Joyce Wanjiru on countback with a score of six over par 78 to emerge the winner of the Silver Division title in the Ladies Open invitation sponsored by Harrison Mwaura at Kiambu Golf Club over the weekend.
Playing off handicap eight, Nyanchama, a product of the former Rose Naliaka Academy, now known as Africa Golf Programme, picked an early double bogey at the par five-second, bogeyed the fifth, eighth and ninth thereafter though a birdie at the 12th boosted her back nine, where she also bogeyed the 15th and 17th for her 78, to beat the handicap two Wanjiru on countback.
Wanjiru started well, rolling in a birdie putt at the first hole, but bogeyed the third and seventh, picked up a triple bogey at the ninth, though it was her double bogey at the par three 17th, which cost her victory. Finishing in third place with gross 86 was Muthaiga’s Susan Kanyora.
In the Bronze division, Millicent Nduati carded 97 gross, to win by a shot from Jane Nzibo, who beat Susan Musyoka on countback. In the Silver division nett category, Vet Lab’s Rachel Ndei won with a score of 70 nett, beating Muthaiga’s June Waweru by two shots. Esther Mugure was third on 74 nett and winning the bronze nett title was Railway’s Jane Ndirangu with 74 nett.
She won on countback from Stella Njoroge, with Rose Kangethe on 75 nett finishing third.
At Royal Nairobi Golf Club, youngster Wambugu Ikinu posted 39 points to claim the Royal Members first prize in the Kenya Defence Forces Golf Association (KDFGA) Patron’s Prize, where former Kenya Golf Union chairman Francis Okwara was second on 37 points after beating third place Kevin Juma on countback.
Leading the the KDF members was retired Colonel N. Kigotho with a score of 35 points, one better than Colonel Githaiga 34 points. In third place with a score of 34 points was retired Colonel Julius Githiri.
In the ladies section, Capt (Dr) Kinyanjui posted 38 points to win by two points from Flora Mutahi 36.
