Only two Kenyans make the cut at Muthaiga

What you need to know:

  • The two are Sigona’s Mohit Mediratta, who shot one under par 70 to qualify for the last two rounds on three under par 139.
  • The other player is Windsor’s Riz Charania, one of the three locals who had made the cut last year.

Only two local players remained in the running for the cash prize in this year’s Barclays Kenya Open at Muthaiga Golf Club.

The two are Sigona’s Mohit Mediratta, who shot one under par 70 to qualify for the last two rounds on three under par 139. The other player is Windsor’s Riz Charania, one of the three locals who had made the cut last year. Charania carded his second level par 71 to make it to the money list with 142.

The two earned themselves Sh100,000 from the Kenya Open Golf Limited for making the cut and will now chase a half a million shillings if they make the top 10 in addition to chasing the title.

“The six qualifying events we played plus those events I played in South Africa really helped me a lot. The same plan I used for the first two rounds, is what I plan to use for the remaining two rounds," said Mediratta.

On the other hand, one of the senior local pros Jacob Okello said the solutions for the locals is to play more competitive events before the Open.

“I sincerely hope that KOGL’s plan to set a tour will work out as I believe it will help local players a lot," said Okello, who said this year the field was very strong with a big number of experienced players who have been in the European Tour.

The duo of Erick Ooko and Greg Snow missed the cut by just a shot. Ooko shot one over par 72 same as Snow for 144. Kenya had entered a total of 22 pros and four amateurs.

Of the amateurs, Edwin Mudanyi shot level par 71 for four over par total. A total of 73 meanwhile made the cut and will proceed to Saturday’s third round from 8am.
