Ngure wins Jamhuri Day golf tourney

One of the leading golfers at Kiambu Golf Club, John Ngure on Wednesday beat three other golfers on countback with a fine score of nett 70 to claim the overall title during the Jamhuri Day golf tournament sponsored by club member Mary Mungai at the par 72 Kiambu course.

The handicap three Ngure, who has been in an excellent form over the past few months, started the day well rolling in a birdie at the first hole.

He however double-bogeyed the ninth, having earlier bogeyed the fourth and fifth for three over par in the front nine.

“The course was a bit tough because of the on going rains, but I managed to keep the ball on the fairway and this is why I was able to score well.

I am happy winning this event because the sponsor Mary Mungai is like a big sister to me," said Ngure, who birdied the 11th, 14th and 18th with a bogey at the 15th , to beat men winner Ephantus Mugo, Simon Kamunge, Joe Njunge and Njogu Njoroge on countback.

Incidentally, the sponsor Mary Mungai, who was also among the big field of 140 players, and who sponsored the event to mark her birthday, had posted nett 69, though being the sponsor she let Ngure take the overall title.

“Although I have beaten everyone on the course, as a matter of courtesy, and since I am the sponsor, I have decided to let someone else take the overall prize," said Mungai, who later on hosted a colourful dinner and live music by popular Musician John de Methew and other musicians.

Taking the first prize among the ladies was Esther Ngure, who posted 72 nett to win by one shot from Elizabeth Kabugi, while winning the first prize among the guests was R. Kibeti on nett 71 after beating Vet Lab Sports Club’s Mary Karano on countback.

The nines went to Pius Mworia and Paul Gituku on 33.5 and 30.5 nett respectively.

In the subsidiary event, Ben Njuguna clinched the sponsors prize with 71 nett and club chairman Timothy Kihara won the men’s longest drive contest, while Barbara Kinyajui was the ladies'longest drive winner.

Paul Kaumbutho, one of the “Mountain Tigers’’ group, clinched the nearest to pin prize.
