Professional golfers are back in the KCB sponsored Pro-Am golf series after a two-year absence.

The pros have been included in four of the five 2019 KCB “Road to the Masters’’ series aimed at promoting the Sunshine Tour-sanctioned KCB Karen Masters golf tournament slated for June 27.

Although the series will feature five events, the pros will only play in four where at stake in each event will be Sh500,000.

The series kicks off next Saturday at Sigona Golf Club course. This is the leg which the pros will miss as they will be at Karen for the last event of the Safari Tour in a bid to acclimatise to the course ahead of the Magical Kenya Open.

The pros start their KCB “Road to Karen Masters’’ with the Nyali leg on March 30 while other events will take place at Thika Sports Club, Nakuru and Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

Speaking during the official launch of the series at Karen Country Club on Thursday, KCB Group Director of Marketing and Communications Angela Mwirigi said:

“We are redefining golfing in Kenya by increasingly giving more opportunities to amateur and professional golfers across the country. We believe in growing sports talent for local and international competitions. It’s our way of using golf to promote sports tourism and as a result catalysing Kenya’s economic growth agenda,” she said in reference to the KCB Karen Masters which will be held at the Karen Country Club from June 25-30.

“We appreciate the confidence the golf fraternity has on our brand and we certainly see this as a long term partnership with mutual benefits for both the golfers in the region and the bank as well in terms of extending its reach across the country,” she added.

The Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) will coordinate the pros section in the series dubbed “Road to the Masters’’.

In the amateur section, six winners will be selected from each leg making a total of 30 amateurs who will qualify to play in the KCB Karen Masters Pro-Am. Those to qualify from each club will be the Men Winner, Lady Winner, Guest Winner, Staff Winner, Junior Winner and a Wild Card winner.

This year, KCB has enhanced its sports sponsorship, reaffirming its confidence in the power of sports to influence lives positively. Last month, KCB said it had committed Sh75 million towards motorsports for the next three years, making a comeback as title sponsor of the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC).
