Home player Greg Snow set up an early command in the opening round of the fifth leg of the Safari Tour Golf series, firing an impressive four under par 67 at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course on Sunday.

Snow, currently leading in the series after his two straight wins and the best pro finisher in one event, started the day by dropping shots on the par three-second and the par five-fourth for two over par at the outward nine. He however produced his usual fireworks, rolling in five birdies starting from the 10th and the short hole-11th and the par four-12th.

He then parred the 13th and 14th before firing in two successive birdies on the 15th and 16th for a low 30, to stay two shots clear of Nyanza’s David Odhiambo and Muthaiga’s resident professional Nelson Mudanyi on 69.

Mudanyi, dropped a shot at the first hole, but managed to pick up two birdies at the fourth and ninth. He then dropped a shot at the par five-19th but fired in two birdies on the 13th and 17th.

On his part, Odhiambo played a bogey-free one under par front nine with a birdie at the third. He embarked on the back nine with a birdie at the 10th, added two more at the 14th and 18th to cancel two bogeys on the 15th and 16th.

“It has been a great round for me, after Saturday’s Pro-Am I felt ready for the tournament and it is good that I have started well. I look forward to the next round, the focus is on playing well on Monday and making the cut,” said Mudanyi.

On the other hand, Windsor’s Riz Charania, long-hitter Dismas Indiza, and Uganda’s Deo Akope were on level par 71 for the day.

Leading the amateurs were Muthaiga’s Mutahi Kibugu and Akshay Chandaria of Windsor who fired one over par 72 to tie for seventh with pros Simon Ngige of Thika and Limuru’s John Kagiri. The second round, which will also decide the top 30 to go for the money and points, is set for Monday 11am.
