Taib claims Chairman's prize in Nyali

What you need to know:

  • At Vet Lab Sports Club, Daniel Ndegwa won the overall prize in the CBA golf tournament, where Japheth Njenga was the men winner with a score of 39 after losing the overall title to Ndegwa on countback.
  • In second place was Paul Njoki, who carded 38, while Martin Mbugua was third with 37 points.

A strong back nine score saw Abdalla Taib beat two others on countback to claim the overall prize during the Chairman’s prize (Kelli Muindi) at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course at the weekend.

Taib, playing off handicap 17, scratched the par four-fourth after pushing his tee shot to the right bush, having started the front nine with a double, two single bogeys and another double at the seventh.

He, however, picked a two-club sixth and closed with a par at the ninth for 18 points.

At the back nine, Taib managed to pick up four pars, one birdie at the 12th, scratched the 13th though a par at the 18th saw him out with 21 points for a total of 39 points, to beat men winner Qamar Naqvi and second placed Gabriel Gakuo on countback.

“I have not won anything here for some time and I am happy I was able to post some good scores thanks to my team-mates for their encouragement. I must thank the outgoing chairman for a fantastic event," said Taib.

Finishing in third place was Said Bajaber with 38 points, while leading the ladies was Wambui Warui on 38 points, winning by two points from Alice Wahome and Susan Stokes.

Dominic Makau won the prize for the past chairmen with a score of 34 points, while Perviz Barnsley was the best senior with 33 points.

In the junior category, Swaleh Taib posted 36 points to win by two points from Andrew Wahome. It was tough, however, for the guests as June Rienye with only 16 points, emerged as the winner.

Emmanuel Lumatete and Wambui Warui won the longest drive contest. Winning the nearest to pin prizes were Hanif Walli and Joyce Masai.

The event, which attracted a field of 192 players, was sponsored by Kelon Insurance Brokers limited and East Africa Breweries Johnnie Walker Whisky.

At Ruiru Sports Club, Stanley Mbugua posted 20 points in each nine for 40 points to claim the overall title in the Paladin Trading and E-Farm Corporate golf day.

He won by one point from men winner Zack Mbugua, who beat Francis Mwaura on countback. Also finishing on 39 for the third prize was David Mbugua, while the ladies first prize went to Beatrice Waweru on 39 points.

She won by two points from Jane Kanari. In third place was Pauline Mungai om 36 points and the nines went to Chege Gacibu on 21 and Lawrence Nganga, who carded 23 points.

Taking the first prize among the guests was Railway’s Ngugi Njuguna on 35 points, with James Olulu winning the nearest to pin prize.

The longest drive winners were Benson Kimani anfd Mary Muthoni.

The sponsors/staff winner was Chris Pasha with a score of 32 points. Dean Oeschig won the men’s longest drive prize and the ladies prize went to Agnes Nyakio and James Ndiritu was the nearest to pin winner;
