Kenyans second best in Entebbe

Uganda’s Ronald Otile clinched his third Uganda Open Amateur golf title at Entebbe Golf Club’s par 71 course as Kenya’s Edwin Mudanyi and John Karichu tied at second place.

The South Africa based Otile picked a quick nine at the par five-11th hole, after dropping three shots earlier over the first, second, sixth. He however managed to put all that behind and rolled in four birdies over the 14th, 15th, 16th and 18th for a three over par 74 and a tournament aggregate of one over par 285.

Of the two Kenyans, Edwin Mudanyi, tried to make a comeback after firing three under par 68, but it was an improvement coming rather late as his two over par 286 was a shot off the leader Otile who won the title in 2015 and 2016.

Mudanyi birdied the first, second, eighth, 15th and 18th but dropped two shots at the sixth and 10th while Karichu  made birdies on the fifth, 11th, and 13th though against four bogeys over the 10th, 15th, 16th and 17th holes.

Another Ugandan player Herman Mutebi finished in fourth place on six over par 290 after a 75 in the final round which included six bogeys and two birdies. The four are likely to be invited to join the professionals in the main Uganda Open starting on Wednesday.

Two other Ugandans Joseph Cwinyaai and Daniel Baguma tied for fifth place on seven over par while tying for the seventh place on 12 over par total was Samuel Njoroge and Uganda’s Joel Basalaine. Tanzania’s Victor Joseph was ninth overall on 13 over after a level par 71.

A total of 13 Kenyan amateurs had travelled to the Uganda for the Open being sponsored this year by Castle Lite and a host of other sponsors. Meanwhile, a total of 21 Kenyan professionals have been listed to play in the $50,000(about Sh 5 million) event after the close of the entries at the weekend.

Those listed include South Africa based Stefan Andersen, Dismas Indiza, David Wakhu, Mohit Mediratta, Eric Ooko, Mohit Mediratta, Simon Ngige and Jacob Okello among many others. The first round of the open, which is marking its 77th year, is set for September 26 at the par 71 Entebbe Golf Club course.
