Two Kenyan professional golfers are among an international field drawn for Tuesday’s first round of the Wild Waves Golf Challenge, a Sunshine Tour event at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club in Durban’s Port Edward, South Africa.

The two, Stefan Andersen and Nelson Mudanyi, got an invitation to play not only in this week’s tournament but in two others. They both left the country soon after the grand finale of the KCB Golf Tour at Leisure Lodge Golf Resort two weeks ago.

South Africa-based Stefan is currently ranked 155th after eight events in the Sunshine Tour’s Order of Merit, well above another Kenyan Dismas Indiza, who has played only three events this year and he is ranked last in 185th position.

Mudanyi, a member of Muthaiga here at home is yet to be ranked in the Tour.

PLAYED WELL IN BURUNDI

From Durban Mudanyi and Stefan will play in the BMG Classic at Glendower Golf  Club, one of the most scenic golf courses not only Gauteng but in the whole of South Africa.

The 600,000 rand event is set for October 18-20 before the two Kenyans travel to Cape Town for the 2,000,000 rand Lion of Africa Cape Town Open from October 31 to November 3.

“Its a bit windy here and the course looks tough but we will give it our best shot,” said Mudanyi, who is trying to re-discover his form since his sterling performance in the Burundi Open some months ago.

Meanwhile back home, a handicap 22 golfer Richard Karano beat a field of 85 players at the nine-hole Machakos Golf Club course during the weekend to emerge the overall winner of the ICEA Lion group sponsored tournament.

He won by two points from immediate past chairman Jackson Ndunda who beat Ben Nyamogo on count back with 39 points to finish second with Nyamogo taking the third prize. In the ladies section Jane Kiiti carded 36 points same as guest winner M. Njogu who won by three points from M.Kinuthia.

TOUGH OUTING

It was a tough outing for Richard Oyare who however won the staff prize with 29 points and emerging the best in the longest drive contest were Fred Kilonzi (men) and Jane Kiiti (ladies). The first and second nine winners were B.K. Kibiko and S.K. Theuri on 22 and 20 points.

At Kitale handicap 16 Hannah Rutenbar emerged the overall winner of the Kenya Forest Service golf tournament. She posted 19 points in each nine for a total of 38 points.

In second place with 37 points just a point behind the winner was S Malakwen who was also a point better than the single handicapper Wycliffe Kamanga who posted 36 points.

Peter Koech with 35 points and finishing fifth was  Charles Yano on 33 points. The next KFS Golf event will be at the Nyali Golf and Country Club on  September 21.
