The first tarmac autocross competition held in Nairobi at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday has been hailed by legendary rally driver Patrick Njiru as the first meaningful step towards road safety by enabling aspiring drivers to enjoy the sport in a controlled environment.

Njiru, who drove the route opening car to ascertain the safety of drivers in the 2km dual carriageway stretch behind Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani said the initiative would revive tarmac racing last held at the defunct Embakasi circuit in mid 1980s and utilise the road network at the sports complex which can create a Formula One circuit course.

This was the re-launch of tarmac autocross for competitors in ordinary street going cars in a culture that is soon catching up with Kenyans with disposable income willing to spend quality time with their cars.

The competition, the first of its kind in Nairobi hit off on a high with 30 drivers in souped up or upgraded and fine-tuned machines lining up for action.
