Academy plans for Nyamira County and Governor’s Cup launched

Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama on Thursday spelt out grand plans for the county’s sports development highlighted by the construction of a Sh4 million sports academy.

Speaking in Nyamira town when he officially launched the Governor’s Cup football tournament, Nyagarama said the county will move the academy from its initial location at Kiabonyoru to Egetii Ki’endege.

He added that progress at Manga was well on course with the perimeter wall, borehole and gate already completed, noting that the levelling of the ground would be done soon.

“We also have plans to work on another ground at Nyamaiya to spread out the development of talent,” he added.

The governor, who was accompanied by sports executive Peter Omwansa and chief officer, Morara Mokua, said his county government had spent most of the resources in this financial year on infrastructure development.

“The next phase is to launch activities and develop talent,” the governor added.

At Thursday’s ‘Governor’s Cup’ launch, Nyagarama gave footballs and uniforms to about 40 teams from all the county’s wards that will play in a knockout basis with the final scheduled for June 26.

He also gave them Sh100,000 for transportation.

Nyamira County has produced some of Kenya’s top players thanks to the steady production line at Gekomoni Secondary School which has won the national secondary schools football tournament twice.
