Favourites on Friday advanced to the quarter-finals of the Nairobi Region Secondary School Term One Games at Nairobi School.

In rugby 15s, champions Upper Hill led last year’s finalists Nairobi School, Ofafa Jericho and Muhuri Muchiri into Saturday’s last eight stage of the competition.

Upper Hill will lock horns with Langata High School in the first quarter-final match, as Muhuri Muchiri battle Moi Forces Academy.

The other quarter-final ties will see Dagoretti High School take on hosts Nairobi School and Ofafa Jericho tackle Lenana School.

Upper Hill got their title defence underway with impressive wins in their preliminary matches.

They opened their account with an empathic 69-0 win over Ushirika. Wingers Samuel Otieno, Centric Onyango and Darron Ogola each grabbed two tries as the champions underlined their intentions of retaining the title.

Upper Hill carried the same momentum into their second match as they recorded another high win, this time crushing Sunshine Secondary School 43-0 in match played under heavy downpour.

Fly-half Brian Otieno, Solomon Maleu, Calvin Kahindi all chipped in with tries as Upper Hill made it two wins on the trot. Upper Hill coach Thomas Walgwe is however expecting stiff competition in the knockout stages.

“It was important to qualify for the quarters where the real actions starts and tomorrow our strength will certainly be tested,” Walgwe.

Muhuri Muchiri, who were knocked out in the quarters last year, also showed their prowess in Pool E overcoming Aquinas and Komarock High Schools respectively.

The Ruai-based school thrashed Aquinas 66-0 in their opener. Inspired by skipper Kelvin Agwambo, Muchiri ran in tries from Simon Gathii, Victor Ayiro, Martin Mutiso, William Opaka and Daniel Mokua. Komarock were next to be slain as they went down 63-0 to Muhuri Muchiri.

In basketball, champions Upper Hill and Buru Buru Girls were off to winning starts in their respective matches.

Two-time national champions Buru Buru edged St Teresa’s Girls 52-16 in their pool A opener, as Upper Hill beat Dandora Boys 53-14.

There were also no upsets in hockey as the champions Dr Ribeiro (boys) and Moi Girls’ Nairobi got off to winning starts. Ribeiro beat Ofafa 3-0 as Moi Girls beat Kianda School 3-0.

The games end on Sunday.
