The Brookside Term One National Secondary School Games on Wednesday got a boost after the milk processor renewed its five-year sponsorship with an enhanced figure of Sh90million.

The amount represents a 50 percent increase from the previous five-year sponsorship of Sh60million.

This year’s games are set to run from April 9 to 14 in Embu County as schools battle for honours in rugby 15s, hockey, basketball, swimming as well as handball and athletics, which were part of the now abolished Term Two A Games.

Teams will also be seeking slots to the East African Games set for Rwanda in August.

Brookside Diary’s Marketing Director Oliver Mary said the amount, which will spread across the next five years, will go towards kitting of all participating teams as well as upgrading of playing infrastructure.

“Brookside keeps enhancing the sponsorship value for the games due to tangible and visible impacts they have on the future of our youth,” Mary said during the sponsorship ceremony at a Nairobi hotel.

Mary revealed that they intend to partner with the Ministry of Education to introduce a coaches’ rewards scheme for the games teachers who lead the various teams to success at the nationals.

Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) chairman Peter Orero lauded Brookside for supporting the games and changing the lives of many youths.

“Sports is an important part of our great culture and investing in it is the way to go for all corporates,” Orero, who took over from the late Kimutai Ngetich, said.

This year’s games will see a number of debutantes among them Meru School, Butere Girls, Sigalame High, Thika High, Moi Girls’ Edloret and Dagoreti High.

Brookside has also appointed talent scouts who will be head-hunting for best players in basketball and hockey under a partnership with Strathmore University, which will see selected players join the university in a sports scholarship programme.

Kangaru Boys and Girls will host rugby, hockey and basketball matches, while swimming will be at the Matendei Club.

Athletics will be at the Kigari Teachers Training College.
