Kilifi shine in Coast primary school games

Defending champions Kilifi County made their intentions of retaining their boys football title clear after edging out main challengers Kwale 4-1 during the Coast Region Primary Schools Ball Games at Ukunda Showground on Thursday.

Kilifi got off to a flying start and deservedly took the lead after 12 minutes when James Kazungu beat an offside trap to send a powerful drive into the far corner in the thrilling Pool A match.

Two minutes later, Joseph Kahindi netted Kilifi’s second goal before Anderson Kabakazi made it 3-0 for the title holders shortly before the breather.

Kwale came back strongly in the second half and got their consolation goal in the 51st minute through Said Abdalla's penalty but Kazungu completed his brace after slotting home from close range.

In their opening match, Kilifi were held to a one-all draw by Tana River. Kilifi took the lead in the 30th minute through Chilodi Mohamed but Mohamed Abdulhakim struck the equaliser for Tana River 10 minutes after the break.

In the Pool B opening fixtures, Lamu put up a brave fight to hold Mombasa to a one-all draw. Lamu took the lead in the 14th minute through Yunusu Farah but Define Kasongo equalised for Mombasa on 21 minute minutes.

Defending girls champions, Kilifi made a flying start by beating Mombasa 2-0 in a Pool A match at Nacet ground. Kilifi got their goals through Joyce Khamisi and Asha Thomas.

In a Pool B clash, Kwale beat Taita Taveta 2-0 with both goals scored by Sikudhani Juma in the 23rd and 55th minutes.

Kilifi, who are also the girls volleyball title holders, made a good start by registering a routine 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-16) win over Taita Taveta before edging out Tana River 3-0 (25-6, 25-9, 25-14) in Pool B matches.

Kilifi handball girls team caused the first major upset in the games when they beat defending champions Kwale 15-10 in a Pool A match. In the same pool, Mombasa beat Taita Taveta 9-3.
