Some Sh120 million will be set aside for the development of 60 football grounds in Kwale County, the Sports and Culture Executive has said.

Ramadhan Bungale said creation of the pitches was part of the county government’s ambitious plans to promote sporting activities in the region.

He, however, said budgetary challenges had led to change of an initial plan to construct several modern stadiums and the country will instead put up three simple sports facilities in each of the 20 wards.

“The project has been scaled down and will now only entail levelling three fields, planting grass, mounting goal posts and nets at a basic level in each ward and later advance to stadiums,” said Bungale.

Speaking at the Kwale Cultural Centre on Wednesday during discussions between the county government and representatives of Dreams Academy on training of local football coaches and players, Bungale said another Sh100 million has been earmarked for the construction of one sports complex in four phases on a yet to be identified site.

“These projects have already been included in the proposed Integrated Development Plan and are part of the government efforts to improve sports in the county,” he said.

He thanked the Academy for partnering with the county.
