Girls’ volleyball champions Kwanthanze from Kenya on Thursday came from two sets down to beat compatriots Cheptil 3-2 to reach the final on the fifth day of the Brookside East Africa Secondary School Games here.

Kwanthanze triumphed 19-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-14, 15-13 in the five-set semi-final thriller.

The three-time winners will now renew hostilities with homeside GS Indagaburezi in Saturday’s final after they beat compatriots IPRC Kigali in straight sets of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-14. Kwanthanze lost to Indagaburezi during the 2015 final in Huye, Rwanda.

Kwanthanze captain Gladys Ekaru admits they will need to improve greatly if they are to retain their gong.

“We started so badly and paid the price as Cheptil easily took points off us. Indagaburezi are more clinical and we therefore cannot afford another terrible start in the final,” Ekaru warned. Chetpil will have only themselves to blame after throwing away a 13-11 lead in the deciding set to painfully miss out in the final.
