Decathlon, Heptathlon and Cross-country have not been scrapped from the National Secondary School Games calendar, the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) clarified on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Education omitted the disciplines from the secondary schools sports calendar of events released to school heads.

The three disciplines have over the years featured in the games calendar and their omission raised fears that they had been abolished from the annual schools sports showpiece.

However, KSSSA chairman Peter Orero said the Ministry had only decided to make the games more competitive and that decathlon, heptathlon and cross country have now been merged under athletics.

“The three disciplines are here to stay. They are now just under athletics and will be held alongside the Term One Games next year. Initially, they used to be listed separately from athletics,” Orero said.

According to the calendar, next year’s National Term One Games will be held at the at Shimo La Tewa School and Shanzu Teachers Training College in Mombasa County from April 5 to 14.
