Menengai Boys have emerged Rift Valley Secondary Schools Sports Association rugby 15s champions after beating Kapsabet Boys 10-0 at St Joseph’s Boys Kitale.

Friday’s final, played on a slippery field occasioned by rains, saw both teams fail to score in the first half. Austin Sikutwa of Menengai scored a penalty for his team, and kept out Kapsabet Boys with a strong defence. Erick Yego scored a try for Kapsabet but he rules ruled to have been offside when he received the ball.

On 38th minute, John Brian teamed up with Griffin Kimeli, who touched down for first try of the match which was converted by Sikukwa for a 10-0 win.

Menengai coach Kennedy Njagi, who is also an alumnus of the school, said the boys had done enough preparations for the games.

“The boys played well and it’s because we had prepared well. Competition was stiff and we expect more competition in the nationals where we are aiming to win the title,” said Njagi.

Njagi observed that Laiser Hill Academy gave them a hard time compared to other opponents in the Rift Valley Championships. In the semi-finals, Menengai had beaten Laiser Hill 3-0, while Kapsabet outclassed Baringo Boys 24-04.

The games held in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, saw teams from 14 sub-counties battle it out for the slots to the nationals.
