Mkongani crowned Kwale County football champs

Minnows Mkongani Secondary Under-19 football team on Saturday beat Shimba Hills 3-0 to emerge champions in Kwale County Secondary Schools Term Two games at Kwale High.

Mkongani, who caused a major upset when they won the Matuga Sub-county Under-16  and Under-19 football titles, were clinical in the match. At the same time, Kwale Girls U-19 football team avenged their 2-1 loss to rivals Waa Girls with a huge 4-0 thumping to retain their title in matches played at the same venue.

Waa Boys and Girls won U-16 football titles at the games which almost aborted after teachers vented their anger on Kwale County education officials for holding onto their allowances and officiating fees.

In the final between Shimba Hills and Mkongani, the victors' goalkeeper Said Kibega impressed with daring saves in the penalty shoot-outs.

Nafi Machafu had shot Mkongani into the lead in the 34th minute but Shimba Hills levelled almost immediately through Said Msaji for a 1-1 score, sending the match into penalties.

Mkongani’s Shaban Mwayamba, Rama Gwaya and Juma Mwamnono converted their shots, while Shimba’s Nafi Machafu, Kishombo Bakari and Ali Juma did not.

Shimba Hills together with Mkongani proceed to the regional championships set for next week at the same venue.

After losing the Under 16 girls title to Waa Girls, Kwale Girls Under 19 side did not have mercy for the Waa Girls senior team, humiliating them 4-0 to successfully retain the title.

Catherine Aringo struck twice while Amani Mwakuni and Elizabeth Katungwa scored the other two goals for Kwale who proceed to defend their regional title alongside Waa Girls.

Waa Boys defeated Lunga Lunga Secondary 1-0 to retain the boys Under 16 title.
