New champs crowned in Biro Lich tourney

New champions emerged in the 2019 Biro Lich High School edition tourney that took place over the weekend in Kisumu.

Handball was the new discipline in the two-day tournament at Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground and which brought together about 40 secondary schools from Nyanza and Western region.

Schools were using the annual tourney as part of their preparation for the Term One Games which begin next month at the sub-county level and will culminate in the nationals set for April in Mombasa.

In basketball, which was the highlight of the event, Agoro Sare and Tigoi were crowned the boys’ and girls’ champions respectively.

The boys’ final was a repeat of last year's with Agoro Sare exacting sweet revenge with a 48-32 score over the defending champions Ambira boys. Ambira had dispatched Agoro Sare 48-33 in last year's final.

Visitors Friends School Kamusinga won their maiden title of the tournament after they edged Kisumu Day 2-1 in an entertaining boys' hockey finals.

Agoro Sare bagged their second title of the tournament in boys’ handball after a 14-9 victory over Kanyamedha Boys in a hard-fought final, while the girls’ crown went to Kanyamedha who beat Nyamira Girls 10-9 in the other highly contested finals.

Timon Oiro and Leesy Akinyi of Agoro Sare and Tigoi were named the boys’ and girls’ basketball Most Valuable Players, while Taiswa Alex Waiswa won the accolade in boys' hockey.

The event was sponsored by Kisumu County Government, SafariLink, Equator bottlers, Creative Natives and Golden Entertainment among others.
