Ouma wins Boda Boda Road Safety race

Francis Ouma is the winner of the inaugural Busia Boda Boda Road Safety Awareness race that was staged at Busia County stadium on Thursday.

The 34-year-old from Busibwabo ward in Matayos Sub County brushed off stiff competition from other 34 competitors to win the race in 1 hour 13 minutes and 30 seconds, to ride home a brand new Honda Motorcycle and Sh 5,000.

“I never imagined that by close of business today I will own a brand new Motorcycle. I thank my supporters, event organisers and above all the almighty God for this triumph. This is a dream come true for me considering that I have toiled for years to get a ride ,” he said, during the event that was attended by Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong and Woman Rep Florence Mutua.

Charles Ageng’a from Bukalama in the out skirts of Busia town, who finished second just five seconds away from Ouma was awarded a brand new bicycle and 5,000 while Peter Mutende who was third after 1: 14; 23 also cycled home with a brand new bicycle and Sh 3,000.

The event was organised under Mutua’s National Government Affirmative Action Fund (Ngaaf).

The Woman MP said there was need for riders to undergo more capacity building to equip them with traffic rules.

“My office will work closely with boda boda operators in Busia and ensure you undergo more training on road safety practices.”

Governor Ojaamong pledged to finance boda boda Saccos through the cooperative Enterprise Development Fund to enable riders procure motorbikes for members and later upgrade to buses.

He encouraged riders to take up National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) medical cover.

“Sometimes you are when you got involved in road accident you are not able to raise even Sh 100 to pay for treatment but if you have NHIF card you will be able to not only cater for own bills but also that of your family as well,” he said.
