Relief for coast schools after ban lifted

What you need to know:

  • Kwale High School's rugby sevens team, which was banned for cheating during last year's national championships in Embu, will however remain banned until the national office says otherwise.
  • Basketball, hockey, handball, athletics, rugby sevens and 15s will feature in the National Term One Games set for Mombasa in April.

All schools that were banned for various offenses by the Coast Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) last year have every reason to celebrate after their bans were lifted.

CSSSA Secretary Mwadena Munga, however, said the teachers in charge of the teams will however serve the full terms of their ban, meaning they will not be allowed to take part in any schools sports activities until the period of the ban is over.

According to Mwadena, the teachers were the main reason why their schools were banned and could not therefore be pardoned.

"We want to start the year on a clean sheet thus the reason to lift the bans of those schools that were banned for reasons ranging from fielding ineligible players to causing trouble during their matches," Munga said, adding that the fact that Coast Region will be hosting the National Term One games in April, made the association review the cases to allow competition.

He said schools like St George's, who are serving bans in basketball, volleyball and handball, Tononoka Secondary School , Shimo La Tewa and Lake Kenyatta Secondary School were all free to field teams at this year's championships which start with the zonal games next month.

Kwale High School's rugby sevens team, which was banned for cheating during last year's national championships in Embu, will however remain banned until the national office says otherwise.

"We are only dealing with the teams we banned at our regional games. Any teams that were banned at the National Level or County level will have to stay banned until their respective sports bodies say otherwise," he said on Monday.
