International renown runner Sandra Chebet of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) lit up the Kenya Communications Sports Organization (Kecoso) Games track and field competition obliterating the field to win the women's 10,000m in a very fast - by the standards of this gathering - 34 minutes 45.22 seconds here in Kakamega.

Chebet, who featured in the 2018 Commonwealth Games 10,000 metre race where she finished 10th, relegated compatriot Emily Chebet to second position in 35:48.08 while Gladys Kemboi of Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) came in third in 36:16.23.

Winner of January’s Valencia 10km road race in Spain and Cape Elizabeth Beach to Beacon Race 10km road race in the US in August, Sandra Chebet was always going to be the favourite in Kakamega and she did not disappoint.

The 24 lap Race started on a slow note that saw the trio exchange positions in turns but it gained momentum mid way as Chebet took control of the proceedings and surged on to an impressive victory.

Vincent Mutei of KPA won the men's 10,000m race in 30:16.07, while Nixon Tangus (Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) finished second in 34:02.29 and Edward Mugereke (KAA) third in 35:03.30.

After the Race Chebet expressed optimism of performing well in the Diamond League.

“Am using the event to test my speed, physical endurance and mental strength,” she said.
