Wiyeta Girls High School and St Anthony’s Boys Kitale were crowned under-19 football champions at the Rift Valley Region Secondary School Games at Hill School, Eldoret.

Wiyeta Girls, the East Africa schools football champions, who lost only one match to neighbours Nasokol Secondary School from West Pokot in their Pool A encounter, beat Itigo Girls 2-0 in the final.

Diana Musilivu gave Wiyeta the lead from the edge of the box before Jackline Barasa’s header sealed victory in the 63rd minute.

“We are happy we won but our focus is on the East Africa School Games to be held in Rwanda where we want to retain our title," said Wiyeta captain Rhoda Wanyama.

Rama Salim scored the only goal to ensure Wiyeta’s win over Chemase in the boys’ under-19 final.

It was a Nandi County affair as Cheptil Girls High School and Kipkenyeloi High School win volleyball girls and boys titles respectively. National volleyball champions Cheptil Girls successfully defended their regional title after hammering Kesogon High School from Trans Nzoia in 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 25-21, 25-21.). Kipkenyeloi beat Tuiyo High in three straight sets of 25-18, 25-19, 25-22.

At the Nyanza Regional games, after a coin ended their hopes of featuring in the term one competition this year, Maseno School are back to the top flight competition.

The Kisumu County-based school booked a slot in this year’s term two nationals thanks to their rugby sevens team that comfortably defended the Nyanza Region Secondary School rugby sevens title.

Maseno who were brilliant throughout the competition hammered their all-time bitter rival St Marys School Yala of Siaya 19-5 in a thrilling final at Kisii School.

The contest was a repeat of the term one rugby 15s final in which Maseno lost to Yala through coin tossing after the two sides tied 10-10 at the end of normal time and 6-6 on penalties.

In the sevens finals, Richel Wangila scored and converted a try to give the holders the lead which John Baraka extended a few minutes later when he crashed through two Yala players to make a try.
