Former Kenyan international Innocent Mutiso and former AFC Leopards coach James Nandwa have urged the new Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Achesa to work with “qualified personnel to change the shape of the industry.”

Mutiso, a former Mathare United, Gor Mahia and Nairobi City Stars player, urged Achesa -who was sworn into office on Friday - to come up with measures that will bring reforms in the sports sector, especially boxing.

“Boxers are anticipating a new change in their industry because now they see someone who understands their plight by virtue of playing the sport,” Mutiso said on Nation Media Group’s NTV Sasa programme on Friday.

“They have their own difficulties likes of Conjestina Achieng’ who brought pride to the country and many more. He should listen to them and effect changes where necessary.”

Nandwa, who led Kenya to the final of the 2012 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Uganda before winning the 2013 edition as an assistant coach, urged the minister to ensure infrastructure are put in place.

“Kenya has talented players who lack facilities. Even we as coaches find difficulties in helping the players because of the system. With proper facilities we will make strides in sports,” said the coach, who guided AFC Leopards to the 2013 GOtv Shield.
