Championship side Kisii RFC head coach Erick Bosire believes the club will make a return to Kenya Cup despite financial difficulties that it has been grappling with since the start of the season.

Nairobi-based Resolution Health insurance had in 2015 penned a three-year sponsorship deal worth Sh6 million with the team, but did not renew upon its expiry in November last year.

This meant that the former Kenya Cup side would depend on well-wishers to honor its fixtures in the second division.

Their financial woes thickened on January 26, when they failed to travel to Diani in Kwale County to take on South Coast Pirates, leaving the hosts to bag four easy points and a score line of 24-0 without kicking a ball. It was South Coast first victory of the season.

Bosire said they failed to travel to Mombasa as they had depleted their meager resources on the road honouring a series of away matches.

“Meeting South Coast was difficult because we had just been there to take on Mombasa Sports Club and then in Nairobi to face Ngong RFC, so we did not have the funds, “he told Nation Sports on phone.

The Kisii-based club currently sits sixth on Championship long with 16points, 15 behind leaders Catholic Monks who are tied with United States International University Africa.

Bosire, a former Stanbic Mwamba player, said the team's plan now is to avoid dropping further in the standings and push for play off qualification and then fight for a return in the top tier league.

“Our quest to return to Kenya Cup remain despite the challenges we are going through. As it is now, we stand a good chance of getting to play-offs.”

He said that the team’s management is working on a sponsorship for the club which they expect go through in the coming weeks.
