  • Mwamba had banked on Homeboyz failing to reach the semi-finals with them going all the way to win the Christies but that didn’t happen.

Skipper Leonard “Lord Muga” Mugaisi came from the sin-bin to score a sudden death try as Homeboyz beat Kenya Harlequin 24-19 to lift the Christie Sevens title at the RFUEA grounds on Sunday.

The victory saw the Deejays spin and dance to their second Stanbic Bank National Sevens Series title with a total of 122 points.

The Christies success was just the icing on the cake for Homeboyz, who had earlier sealed the Series victory in the quarterfinals when they blanked Mean Machine 29-5.
Homeboyz, who are sponsored by Menengai Cream Soap, went on to crush Strathmore Leos 41-5 in the semis, before silencing hosts Quins for their fourth victory of the season after their success at Prinsloo, Sepetuka and Kabeberi.

Mwamba, who were also in contention for the national title going into the final day of action, saw their hopes shattered when they lost to Blue Bulls & Tuks Combined from South Africa 22-14 in the cup quarterfinals.

Mwamba had banked on Homeboyz failing to reach the semi-finals with them going all the way to win the Christies but that didn’t happen.

“This is our best season ever in the series, winning Christie Sevens and the Series at ago,” said Homeboyz head coach Paul Murunga.

“In fact, it’s thrilling when it’s the captain scoring the decisive try coming from the sin-bin.”

Homeboyz found themselves in trouble when Mugaisi was sent to the sin-bin by referee Constant Cap, before Quins cashed on their numbers to score two tries through Cyprian Kuto and Solomon Okia.

Aaron Ofoyrwoth converted both tries for a 14-0 lead.

Homeboyz stepped up with Jeff Oluoch pulling one try for them with Johnston Olindi converting as they trailed 14-7 at the break.

Homeboyz outmuscled Quins in their own ruck to win a turnover as Oluoch sliced through to score. Olindi added the extras to tie the match at 14-14.

Ofoyrwoth would follow up his brilliant overhead kick to pick the ball and score, but missed the converted to retake the lead 19-14.

Okia was then sin-binned to give Homeboyz an opportunity with Olindo scoring to tie the match again at 19-19 as the full time buzzer went.

Homeboyz would brush off Quins from the kick-off ball before Mugaisi finished off with a try between the posts to win.

“We might have slipped at Driftwood but we polished on our defence and kick-offs and that is what has delivered victory,” said Mugaisi.

Blue Bulls & Tuks Combined finished third to win bronze after beating Strathmore Leos 31-7, while Kenya Commercial Bank settled for fifth with a 29-5 victory against Uganda Emerging Sevens.
