What you need to know:

  • KCB edged out 36-8 Kabras in last year’s final, having also beaten the western Kenya sugar millers 27-3 during the 2014/2015 Kenya Cup final.
  • Kabras, who are chasing their second Cup victory, humbled Impala Saracens 22-5 to lift the 2015/2016 title.

Champions Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) will yet again meet Kabras Sugar in the 2017/2018 Kenya Cup rugby league final.

The bankers edged out Impala Saracens 15-0 at KCB Ruaraka while Kabras Sugar beat Homeboyz 29-13 at Jamhuri Park Show ground to set up a repeat of last year's final.

It will the third time KCB and Kabras are meeting in the final in the last four seasons.

Ugandan international fullback Philip Wokorach's 100 per cent kicking and former Kenya Simbas coach Jerome Paarwater Midas touch gave Kabras Sugar the tone to once again prevail over the Deejays and storm their fourth consecutive Kenya Cup finals.

Kabras trailed 18-0 at the break before rallying to beat Homeboyz 23-18 in last year's semi-finals.

Wokorach converted Colman Were and Max Adaka's tries before slotting over five penalties including one from centre field to spur Kabras to victory.

Michael Wanjala converted Joshua Chisanga's try in the first half as Mohammed Omollo curled over two penalties but failed to rescue the Deejays at the rained-soaked grounds.

Kabras and Homeboyz shared the first half spoils 7-7 before Kabras Sugar turned on the style, forcing their opponents to make errors - to benefit immensely from the penalties.

REVENGE

It was a swift revenge by Kabras Sugar, who had suffered a humiliating 41-12 defeat to Homeboyz in the regular season.

“The first half was a bit tight but the second session proved perfect for us with all the 23 players doing a perfect job,” said Kabras head coach Charles Cardovillis, who was backed up by Paarwater and Anthony Ogot.

“The players executed well and kept to the structures,” said Cardovillis, who was in praise of Wokorach from his brilliance with the boot. “He is a great asset as his kicking helped in such wet conditions.”

KCB, who are chasing their sixth Kenya Cup success, finally claimed the scalp for Impala Saracens for the first time since 2014 in the competition, touching down two tries, a conversion and a penalty to silence the Sarries.

Peter Karia’s try and Darwin Mukidza’s penalty gave KCB an 8-0 lead at the break before Mukidza converted Michael Wanjala’s try for the victory.

KCB edged out 36-8 Kabras in last year’s final, having also beaten the western Kenya sugar millers 27-3 during the 2014/2015 Kenya Cup final.

Kabras, who are chasing their second Cup victory, humbled Impala Saracens 22-5 to lift the 2015/2016 title.
