Character did it for us against a strong opponent, says KRU boss Muthee

The national rugby team launched their campaign to the 2015 Rugby World Cup finals in storming fashion, upsetting Namibia 29-22 at a jam-packed Mahamasina Stadium in Antananarivo Saturday.

In the other match of the Rugby World Cup qualifiers, Zimbabwe hit hosts Madagascar 57-22 to take an early lead in the competition that doubles up as the Confederation of Africa Rugby (CAR) Division 1A championship.

Namibia raced to a 12-0 lead in the first nine minutes but Kenya reduced the deficit at 7-12 at the drinks with centre Humphrey Kayange scoring a try.

After a round of possession Kenyan forwards mauled before scrum-half Edwin Achayo sneaked on the blind side to score. Then loose head prop Joseph Kang’ethe touched down from a drive even though Kenya still trailed 19-22 in the 53rd minute.

KENYA DREW LEVEL

Kenya drew level 22-22 in the 62nd minute from fly half Lavin Asego’s penalty.

After three phases, super sub Andrew Amonde sold a dummy to score as Kenya extended their lead to 27-22. Lyle Asiligwa, who replaced injured Achayo, converted to give Kenya the vital bonus point 29-22 victory.

“We played as a team, something we’d promised each,” said Amonde. “We will take a game at a time and Zimbabwe’s score against Madagascar does not worry us.”

KRU chairman Mwangi Muthee urged the team to stay focused. “It’s a great start but all the teams are tough. The boys must keep focus,” said Muthee.
“Character did it for us against Namibia, who had seven players from the Super Rugby.”

Eighth man Martin Owila, who made his international debut, said: “It’s so important to me and all that we wanted is to put a smile on the faces of Kenyans as we head to the UK next year.” Confident Kenya face Madagascar on Wednesday at 3pm in their next match while Namibia take on Zimbabwe.
