What you need to know:

  • Back on the pitch in the first semi, industrious lads John Baraka and Barnabas Osoro touched down for the hosts in either half, with Walter Omanyo converting both tries for a resounding 14-0 win over Ambira.
  • Meanwhile in the second encounter, Chavakali edged out a spirited Kakamega 12-10 to set up a mouth-watering final.

Hosts Maseno School will this weekend battle it out with Chavakali High in the final of the Nation Media Group (NMG) sponsored 2018 Maseno School Rugby Sevens Tournament.

The two teams eased through to the final on Sunday after winning their penultimate encounters against Kakamega and Ambira High respectively.

However, heavy downpour cut off the competition from its conclusive end forcing organisers to postpone it to this Saturday, where Chavakali has been given the hosting rights meaning Maseno will play away from their home fans.

Back on the pitch in the first semi, industrious lads John Baraka and Barnabas Osoro touched down for the hosts in either half, with Walter Omanyo converting both tries for a resounding 14-0 win over Ambira.

Meanwhile in the second encounter, Chavakali edged out a spirited Kakamega 12-10 to set up a mouth-watering final.

Maseno, the 2014 national 7s champions, who had paraded three teams in the event, could have easily turned the final into their teams' affair had their triple sides replicated their group stage heroics in the quarterfinal matches of the event that attracted a total of 13 schools.

Maseno rugby coach Paul Nyamita said they are using the competition to prepare for the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Term Two games that kick off next week across the nation.

“I am happy with the performance of my teams though my wish was to see at least two at the final. We still have a key match against Chavakali who have been excellent throughout the competition.

We expect a tough encounter away from home but we are gearing for nothing less than a win,” said Nyamita.

Other teams that took part in the tournament include Vihiga, Kabianga, Moi Sirgoi, Barding, Butula, Kamusinga, Banja, Chianda and Shikunga.
