Maseno too hot to handle in NMG-sponsored tourney

Hosts Maseno School were in imperious form in Day One of the Nation Media Group (NMG) sponsored 2018 Maseno School Rugby Sevens Tournament that kicked off on Satuday.

The 2014 national 7s champions, who paraded three teams in the event, eased through to quarterfinals.

In Pool A, Maseno A beat Vihiga 12-7 in a closely contested match while Kakamega High beat Vihiga 10-0 to join Maseno at the top of the group.

Vihiga B beat Moi Sirgoi 10-0 in a Pool B encounter to storm to the last eight while Maseno B saw off Barding 40-0 in a lop-sided encounter to record the biggest score in the first day of action.

In Pool C matches, Kamusinga from Bungoma and Butula B (Busia) eased through after seeing off Kabianga High (26-7) and Chianda (19-10) respectively.

Chavakali from Vihiga saw off Shikunga from Kakamega County 24-19 to top Pool D alongside Maseno C.

Maseno rugby coach and tournament coordinator Paul Nyamita said they are using the competition to prepare for Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association second term games that kick off next week across the nation.

“We are keen on a comeback to the national stage on the backdrop of missing out the 15s regional title to rivals St Mary’s Yala. We thank tournament sponsors NMG for giving sports a priority,” said Nyamita.

The competition, which has attracted a total of 13 teams, ends on Sunday.

Pool A: Maseno 1, Kakamega, Vihiga and Kabianga 1

Pool B: Maseno 2, Moi Sirgoi, Barding, Vihiga B and Butula A

Pool C: Kamusinga, Banda, Kabianga 2, Chianda and Butula B

Pool D: Chavakali, Maseno 3, Kakamega 2, Ambira and Shikunga.
