University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine and Nakuru’s Menengai Oilers have been promoted to the 2018/2019 Kenya Cup Rugby League.

Machine made a grand return to the top flight when they thrashed Western Bulls 18-0 to win their Kenya Rugby Union Championship semi-final at the varsity's grounds.

Oilers, handled by former Kenya 15 Simbas and Sevens player Gibson Weru, are set for their debut just two seasons after formation after beating Kisumu 32-3 in the other semi-final at the Nakuru ASK Showground.

However, the two teams will clash in the KRU Championship final on Saturday at the Nakuru ASK Showground. The teams will replace Mombasa and Kisii, who have been relegated from Kenya Cup.

Dominic Mogendi and Edward Maroko scored a try each as Trevor Asina made one conversion. Asina and Festus Shiasi kicked over two penalties to propel Machine back to Kenya Cup after they were relegated last season.

KEYOGA STARS

Derrick Keyoga, Anthony Kibet, Aziz Anan, Hilary Malwenyi and Clinton Odhiambo scored a try apiece for Oilers as Keyoga romped back with two conversions and a penalty for Oilers.

Weru said their target two years ago was to earn promotion. “We have done that but the hard work starts,” said Weru. “We want to finish with a flourish by winning the Championship then plan for Kenya Cup.”
