What you need to know:

  • Record 40 teams to compete in fourth leg of National Sevens Series in Nakuru
  • Driftwood Sevens champions Mwamba will be out to continue their good run in the fourth leg of the National Sevens Series when they take on Kabras Sugar in Saturday’s opener from 10am.

Rugby action shifts to Nakuru Athletics Club this weekend where 40 teams will compete in the eighth edition of the Top Fry Prinsloo Sevens.

Driftwood Sevens champions Mwamba will be out to continue their good run in the fourth leg of the National Sevens Series when they take on Kabras Sugar in Saturday’s opener from 10am.

Mwamba, who won the inaugural cup in 2007, 2008 and went on to clinch the diadem in 2010 and 2011, face an uphill task in pool ‘A’ where they will fight it out with Western Bulls, Kabras Sugar and Mount Kenya University from Thika.

The three-day extravaganza which has attracted the largest entry this year since its inception in 2007, is expected to draw thousands of fans. Kenya Cup teams will compete in Division One and Eric Shirley sides in Division Two.

KCB IN POOL D

Three-time winners and defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) are in a relatively easy pool ‘D’ alongside Homeboyz,  Kisii University and Nondies.

The bankers first won the Prinsloo title in 2012 and triumphed in 2013 and last year. If they retain it this year, KCB will enter record books for having won the cup four times in a row.

Strathmore Leos who clinched the trophy in 2009 start as hot favourites in pool ‘C’ but the university lads will have to up their game to overcome a stubborn Quins, Catholic University of Eastern Africa and Kisumu RFC.

Interestingly, hosts Nakuru RFC, popularly known as Wanyore, have never won the cup. They will bank on home support as they battle in pool ‘B’ against Impala, Kenyatta University Blak Blad and Makueni.

Pool ‘E’ looks the easiest of the tournament as it will feature Nakuru ‘B’, Daystar University, Stormers and Egerton University, Njoro. The Prinsloo Sevens, the biggest rugby event in Nakuru County after the annual Great Rift 10-a-side, is jointly sponsored by Nation Media Group and Menengai Oil Refineries.

The annual tournament is named after a South African rugby fan who lived in Nakuru in the 1980s before succumbing to diabetes. The event gets underway with the schools tournament Friday.
