The youthful Menengai Oilers may have slipped in their 46-37 defeat at the hands of Nakuru RFC in the 10th round of Kenya Cup rugby league at Nakuru Athletics Club on Saturday, but seem to have sent a strong signal to their neighbours to be prepared for tough battles ahead.

Their superb display against the experienced and battled hardened side proved that they are ready to take on the big boys head on.

They gave Nakuru a big scare and this should make their next opponent, Mean Machine, go back in their drawing board and plot how they will wrestle the enterprising Oilers.

Captain Moses Arara is optimistic that moving forward, Wanyore as Nakuru is popularly known will never have their way.

“Their victory is short lived as we are now ready to change the rugby narrative in Nakuru and Wanyore will no longer be dancing isikuti dance in front of us,” said Arara after the thrilling encounter against the former Kenya Cup champions.

Oilers were almost upsetting their older brothers and at some point Nakuru trailed 12- 24 in the explosive free-scoring match, the first ever league encounter between the two sides.

Lapses in the second half saw Gibson Weru-coached Oilers lose their mettle and allow their hosts to turn tables on them.

“I think the slim first half win may have entered our heads and we lost our concentration and this saw us miss easy chances as our opponents drill in easy tries,” said Arara.

Arara said that his relatively young players are catching up well and soon they will be able to take on the Kenya Cup big boys.
“I think with time and enough exposure they will be able to match the big boys and it will no longer be business as usual,” warned Arara.
“The boys are gelling on well and every match they play is a learning lesson and is hardening them up to collide with the established players.”

Against Mean Machine, Arara said they were not underrating their opponents but will go flat out for the much needed win stay on course to finish the league in a respectable position.

“We are going to rectify the mistakes we made against Wanyore because our next match against Mean Machine is a must win for us.”
