Shujaa launch Hong Kong 7s campaign

What you need to know:

  • Kenya goes into the seventh leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series in eighth place with 64 points with their best run coming in Canada where they lost to Fiji 31-12 in the final.
  • Australia is the only team in Pool “B” that currently placed above Kenya in the season’s standing.
  • The Aussies are in fourth place with 84 points.

Kenya Sevens will launch their quest for Hong Kong Sevens title against Canada Friday at 2:54pm at Hong Kong Stadium.

The team is still revelry in the success of reaching the Canada Sevens final, their best performance in the series since winning Singapore Sevens in 2016.

Their second pool opponents will be Spain, whom they will face Saturday at 8:10am, before taking on Australia at 12:10pm.

Australia is the only team in Pool “B” that currently placed above Kenya in the season’s standing. The Aussies are in fourth place with 84 points.

Canada, whose best run was in South Africa where they finished fourth, are placed 11th with 37 points while Spain are 14th with 27 points with their best shows being in Dubai, South Africa and Canada where they lost  Challenge Trophy final.

Australia will arguably be Kenya’s toughest pool opponents with Innocent Simiyu’s charges having lost to the Aussies in all their three encounters this season.

Kenya and Australia met in the fifth place play-off semi-final in Dubai where the Aussies won 19-12. Kenya had beaten Canada 29-15 in the Pool stage to qualify for the main Cup in Dubai.

Kenya met Australia again in New Zealand but lost once again 33-12 in the main Cup quarterfinals. Kenya also beaten Canada 19-14 in the Pool stages to make the Cup quarters.

Kenya and Australia met for the third time in the fifth place play-off semi-finals in USA where the Aussies triumphed 26-21 after being pushed to extra time.  They beat Spain 43-3 in the pool stage in Canada on their way to the Cup final.

Pool “A” comprises Fiji, New Zealand, Russia and Samoa while defending champions and series leaders South Africa will face England, Scotland and South Korea in Pool “C”. Pool “D” has USA, Argentina, Wales and France
