Stanbic Mwamba, Homeboyz biggest movers in Kenya Cup league

Former champions Stanbic Mwamba and Homeboyz were the biggest movers on the log as Kenya Cup rugby league entered its seventh round on Saturday.

However, its 2016 champions Kabras Sugar, defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Kenya Harlequin, who claimed vital wins to maintain their positions in top three vanguard.

Stanbic Mwamba, the 1983 Kenya Cup champions, stunned Impala Saracens 20-16 at the Railway Club to move two places to fourth in the league with 22 points from four wins and three losses.

Simon Odongo’s Homeboyz had to dig deep before stopping two times champions Nakuru 19-18 at the Nakuru Athletics Club. The Deejays’ fourth victory, also saw them move two places to fifth with 20 points.

At Jamhuri ASK Showground, Kabras Sugar underlined their championship credentials when they steam rolled over a shocked Nondescripts 44-5, chalking their seventh bonus point victory of the season. The Henley du Plesssis-coached team is yet to taste defeat this scoring and have let in a measly 56 points and scored a whopping 314 points.

The Kakamega-based side has  maintained their five-point gap with second placed KCB who survived a scare before downing a stubborn Blak Blad 20-15 at Kenyatta University grounds, their sixth victory of the season.

The Bankers have also been registering bonus point wins since going down 26-22 to Nondies early in the campaign. They have a four-point lead over third placed Quins who thumped a hapless Mean Machine 47-3 at RFUEA Grounds.

But will Stanbic Mwamba continue their winning streak when they travel to Kakamega to face the ominous Kabras Sugar on Saturday?

Kulabu have been solid especially the last three matches, using some of the experienced players like Collins Injera, who has scored in every match. Injera landed a hat-trick of tries when Mwamba blew Strathmore Leos apart 47- 25 and scored  in their 20-16 and 27-15 wins against Impala and Menengai Oilers.

“We reckon that Kabras have been winning with huge margins and it’s no surprise that they are on top of the league standings. It will now will be more of a mental game for us in Kakamega,” Injera told Nation Sport.

Injera said they are looking forward on building on their steady climb, having worked on our structures with coach Kevin “Bling” Wambua.

“Kabras will be a big game for us but I hope the results will favour us,” he said.

Homeboyz on the other hand will be eyeing a bonus point victory against winless Strathmore Leos on Saturday. Leos drew 19-19 with Menengai Oilers in Nakuru on Saturday, a result that saw them rise from the basement of the table to 11th, a point ahead of Mean Machine. a point ahead of Mean Machine.

KCB will welcome Nakuru at Ruaraka while Nondies host Mean Machine at Impala Grounds where Impala Saracens will take on next door neighbours Quins in the mouth-watering Ngong Road derby. Blak Blad will host Oilers at Kenyatta University hoping to move away from danger zone.
