Sylvia Kamau on Wednesday was confirmed as the new Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chief executive officer for an initial period of one year with effect from January 1.

Kamau, former Strathmore University sports administrator, has been the acting CEO since August last year after Robert Bukusi quit without giving any reason. Her appointment was announced by KRU chairman Richard Omwela at press conference at RFUEA Grounds on Wednesday morning.

“Kamau’s appointment was necessitated by the need for continuity as KRU continues to engage partners in sponsorship initiative and restructure its operations despite the challenging operating environment,” Omwela.

Kamau also doubles up as an elected board member and director in charge of Leagues and Fixtures, a position she will continue to handle until her replacement is elected at the March Annual General Meeting.

She’s also former Strathmore University women’s basketball team coach.

Omwela noted that under her watch, Kamau has successfully led KRU’s secretariat in a number of critical programmes including the Safari Sevens, the Rugby World Cup Qualifiers in France and the start of the 2018/19 World Sevens Series.

“The Board wishes her the best as she embarks on this journey and requests all stakeholders to support her as she takes on this challenging but exciting responsibility,” said Omwela.
