K'Ogalo far much better than Ingwe

What you need to know:

  • Gor Mahia has won four league titles over the last five years and we are headed to winning our fifth title because the club management has been focused on success.
  • Ingwe meanwhile have not won a league title over the last two decades and they claim to be a giant club.

A banter on social media last week by one David King Onjili caught my attention. He wrote: “What's the difference between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia?

Many fans have asked me this question, here is your answer. If you take the current Gor Mahia squad plus coach (Dylan) Kerr and call them Ingwe, then ask Ingwe supporters to rally behind them. After 3 games, they will draw one and lose two.

If you take the current AFC Leopards squad and call them Gor Mahia and ask the Green Army to support them, they will win all their remaining fixtures.

The difference between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards is mentality and environment. A mediocre player at Gor becomes a world beater, it is in their DNA. It has taken years of planning and now we are seeing the fruits. Football is not witchcraft, it is a vision, right personnel and standards.

For Ingwe to rise, they need a mental shift, right from the fans to management to players. The only relevant thing Ingwe can do is banter online.”

Well stated Onjili.

Over the last four years that I have been writing this column, Ingwe has changed coaches half a dozen times, we cannot even count the number of players who have played for the club yet they have won nothing.

When it comes to banter, I doubt if we can beat our noisy neighbours. But when it comes to success, no team can match Gor Mahia.

In the 70s and 80s the battle for the league title was between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. The Mashemeji derby was one of the biggest matches in this side of continent.

Sadly, so much has changed and today, our arch rivals have become a mid-table side that celebrates victory against nondescript estates sides like Kariobangi Sharks and Kangemi United.

When invited to play against the regional sides, AFC always disappoints. How can a club that prides itself as the second most successful in Kenya lose to a team like Singida?

Gor Mahia’s success in the SportPesa Super Cup was a clear reminder to the Ingwe nation that we are not equal.

A few weeks ago, I stated here that time is coming when Gor Mahia will demand to play in the same league with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Liverpool because we seem to lack real opponents in the Kenyan Premier League and in this region.

As David King Onjili put it in his banter, football is not about witchcraft, it is proper planning and vision.

Gor Mahia has won four league titles over the last five years and we are headed to winning our fifth title because the club management has been focused on success.

Ingwe meanwhile have not won a league title over the last two decades and they claim to be a giant club.

My advice to Ingwe is, put your house in order and start challenging us.
