Uasin Gishu County has come into the limelight over accusations of hawker harassment, after a video emerged online on revealing the shocking brutality of the County inspectorate officers on the hawkers.
In the videos captured on a street behind the Eldoret Main Market, a group of officers in civilian clothing flanked by uniformed police officers are seen dragging a man on the ground while clobbering him. The officers are also captured destroying produce believed to belong to the hawkers.
Responding to the issue, the County Security Advisor Paul Ruto said the county had embarked on an exercise to evict hawkers from the Eldoret Central Business District, because they had refused to use a modern market put up for them. Members of the public had apparently complained about the conduct of hawkers. The hawkers say they will raise the matter with the Governor and Independent Policing Oversight Authority.
