Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei opposes government plans to import maize
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has opposed plans by the government to import maize from other countries.
Mr Cherargei said many farmers from the grain basket are still holding millions of bags of maize adding that this should be exhausted before any plans of importation.
He warned that President Uhuru Kenyatta's legacy of achieving food security which is one of the pillars in the Big Four Agenda risk being derailed if the drought menace is not addressed adequately.
Mr Cherargei said that the maize sector has been infiltrated by cartels who are making a kill as farmers suffer.
The government has put the number of people in need of food aid 1.1 million with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning that the rains will delay this year.
