Police on the spot over shooting incident at Antubetwe
A trader at Antubetwe in Igembe North is nursing bullet wounds after he was shot by undercover police officers in an operation to recover counterfeit products.
The police officers, who are said to have arrived in civilian clothes using a private vehicle were forced to shoot in the air after rowdy locals demanded to know their identity.
Locals said the officers stormed a shop in plain clothes and without identifying themselves leading to a confrontation with the public.
Residents of Antubetwe are now demanding investigations into the conduct of the officers who used live ammunition leading to shooting of a butcher in the leg.
But Meru Police Commander Patrick Lumumba said the police officers were in uniform and had escorted anti-counterfeit officers who were in civilian clothes.
