Kenya demands release of terror war captives

The government has called for unconditional release of two civil servants that were abducted by Al-Shabaab in Wajir 11 days ago.

Internal Security Permanent Secretary Francis Kimemia said the government had put in place measures to ensure the safe return of District Officer Mule Yesse and registration of persons officer Patrick Wainaina.

“Indeed, I wish to urge the family and friends of the two officers to remain calm as the government pursues the matter,” Mr Kimemia said in a statement to the media.

Mr Yesse and Mr Wainaina were kidnapped when suspected Al-Shabaab militia men raided an Administration Police camp in Wajir.

The armed raiders killed eight people and injured others. Last week, the Al-Shabaab posted the photographs of the two government officers on Twitter. (READ: Al-Shabaab release photos of abducted Kenyans)

Mr Mule’s family has been holding prayers in Nairobi for his release with his father, Mr Edward Yesse, expressing confidence that his son will be released safely.

Live up to their oath

Separately, the Chief of Defence Forces General Julius Karangi at the weekend said soldiers deployed in the battle front would live up to their oath to protect Kenya’s interests.

“The oath that we took when we accepted to serve in uniform in defence of our country is still intact and therefore we shall defend our national interests and values at whatever cost,” he said at Lanet Air Strip, Nakuru, during the 32nd edition of the Kenya Defence Forces Cross Country championships.

“We in uniform exist as the defenders of our country and our people and we will not only continue to win medals in sports but even more importantly we will win in the battle field against Al-Shabaab,” he added.

He said the soldiers on the battle front had registered remarkable success against the Al-Shabaab since the war started 105 days ago.

“The Kenya Defence Forces is proud of our land, air, and sea warriors who are currently deployed in Somalia to ensure the survival of our country,” General Karangi said. He thanked the government and Kenyans for their moral and material support.
