Hordes of furious Maasai women on Thursday invaded Simba shopping centre, accusing their Kamba counterparts of snatching their men.

Armed with machetes and rungus, they pounced on the unsuspecting targets breaking an arm of one of their victims, inflicting wounds on four others.

The attack triggered a dash to safety in the Mombasa Road town that straddles Makueni and Kajiado counties 140 kilometres south east of Nairobi.

According to the area Administration Police Commander Mr Alexander Muasya, the women, numbering about 50, also vandalised bars and demolished miraa stalls.

He added: “The women claimed that their men had abandoned their families and indulged in binge drinking and philandering at the trading centre.”

Officers fired into the air to avert bloodshed after a section of the market residents grouped to repel the attackers.

However, Mr Muasya said that police were yet to arrest the attack’s masterminds or those who took part in it.

Witnesses whom Nation spoke to said that the angry women initially attacked any woman they came across, before picking on those idling at the shopping centre.”

“As they chased their victims, the attackers claimed Kamba women had caused their husbands to abandon their homes,” said Ms Jessica Kanini, a greengrocer said.
