Peace efforts on the border between Isiolo and Meru counties were Saturday evening done a blow after a herder was killed in Igembe North.

About 60 head of cattle were also stolen at Mitoone, Igembe North, by attackers suspected to have come from Isiolo.

The incident occurred while Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery was presiding over a security meeting between Meru and Isiolo leaders at Gambela, Tigania East.

Naathu Ward Representative Joshua Mithiaru told the Sunday Nation on the phone that the raiders struck at around 3 pm. The deceased was identified as Jacob Ntombura.

Ten people have been killed in Igembe North and Tigania East in Meru in the past 10 days.

Four others have died in Isiolo following rising insecurity in the two counties.

Meanwhile, Mr Nkaissery warned politicians from the two counties against inciting their communities to fight.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary also ordered all holders of illegal firearms to register them by Tuesday.

The CS said demarcation of the controversial Meru/Isiolo counties boundary will start soon based on the Nanyuki accord of 2013.

The CS was addressing political leaders, elders and security teams from both counties at Gambela, following a protracted dispute between Isiolo and Meru residents.

Eastern Regional Commissioner Claire Omollo, Meru Governor Peter Munya and Isiolo Deputy Governor Mohammed Guleid attended the meeting.

MPs Joseph Samal (Isiolo North), Banticha Abdullahi (Isiolo South), Rahim Dawood (Imenti North), Mpuru Aburi (Tigania East), David Karithi (Tigania West), Joseph M’Eruaki (Igembe North), Kubai Kiringo (Igembe Centra), Fatuma Dullo (nominated Senator) and Florence Kajuju (Meru Women Representative) were also present.

“Every Kenyan has a right to live anywhere in the country. It is the responsibility of the government to protect lives and property. Any politician found inciting locals will be arrested and prosecuted,” the CS said.
