President Kenyatta and Cord leader Raila Odinga plan to woo reps

What you need to know:

  • The county representatives are scheduled to meet President Kenyatta at State House this week.
  • Cord leader Raila Odinga said they have planned a retreat with members to rally them behind their bid for a vote.

The Jubilee government and the Cord Coalition have stepped up the battle to win members of the County Assemblies as the referendum debate rages.

The county representatives are scheduled to meet President Kenyatta at State House this week as the Jubilee Government seeks their support to reject the referendum Bill when it lands in the assemblies.

At the same time, Cord leader Raila Odinga said they have planned a retreat with members to rally them behind their bid for a vote.

Government sources said the President’s meeting was supposed to take place on Wednesday even though the President’s diary showed that he will be in Mombasa to open a Huduma Centre at the GPO.

On Tuesday, the chairman of the County Assemblies Forum, Dr Nuh Abdi said the date had not been confirmed.

“The meeting has been repeatedly postponed. When I get a confirmation of the meeting, I’ll let you know,” he said.

This comes a day after Mr Ruto promised members that they will get offices and staff.

But Mr Odinga described the promises by the Jubilee government as “nothing short of corruption” and urged them not to betray their voters who want devolution to work.
