What you need to know:

  • The outing will give K’Ogalo a chance to make amends by winning the regional elite club championship having lost out on the KPL Top Eight tournament and crashed out of the GOtv Shield Cup.
  • The Kenyan representatives have won the regional title three times in 1980, 81and 85 and this year’s edition gives them the chance to make a strong show after a 19-year absence.

Gor Mahia head coach Bobby Williamson is bullish that his charges can have a good tournament in the Cecafa Kagame Interclub Cup that begins next month.

Williamson, who over the weekend suffered the ignominy of being bundled out of the Domestic Cup in the hands of lower tier side GFE 105, says the outing will give K’Ogalo a chance to make amends by winning the regional elite club championship having already lost out on the KPL Top Eight tournament.

“Before we go to Rwanda we still have a few matches in the league. We need to do well and build the momentum.

“The championship (Kagame Cup) is important. We need to do well and fight to represent both the club and the country with honour.

“When the championship begin we will have a full house with key players like Danny (Sserunkuma). Walusimbi (Godfrey) and Kizito (Geoffrey) back which will be a big boost for us,” he said.

TOUGH POOL

Gor will have to navigate a tough pool B that includes Rwandan giants APR, KCCA (Uganda), Flambeau Del’Est (Burundi) and Telecom of Djibouti if they are to realise the dream.

The Kenyan representatives have won the regional title three times in 1980, 81and 85 and this year’s edition gives them the chance to make a strong show after a 19-year absence.

The Kenyan champions will open their campaign against KCCA on August 8 at the 30,000 seater Amahoro Stadium.

The government of Rwanda is sponsoring the two week football extravaganza to a tune of Sh17.4million ($200,000) while Cecafa has pumped in a further Sh8.7million ($100,000).

Winners will pocket approximately Sh2.6million ($30,000), runners up Sh1.7milion ($ 20,000) and third place finishers Sh870, 000 ($10,000).

The two week fiesta due August 8-24 in the capital Kigali has attracted a total of 15 clubs. The tournament’s referees will undergo medical tests on August 6 in Kigali, two days before the region’s elite clubs begin fighting for honours.
